Direct-on-Filter FTIR Spectroscopy to Estimate Calcite as A Proxy for Limestone ‘Rock Dust’ in Respirable Coal Mine Dust Samples
نویسندگان
چکیده
Application of fine, inert ‘rock dust’ (RD) to the surfaces in underground coal mines is a common method for mitigating dust explosion hazards. However, due its size, RD has potential contribute respirable mine (RCMD) concentration. Though component RCMD does not appear pose sort health hazards associated with other components such as crystalline silica, understanding relative abundance may be quite helpful evaluating and controlling primary sources. Given that products are frequently comprised high-purity limestone (i.e., primarily calcite mineral), serve suitable proxy measuring RD. To estimate mass percentage samples, this study demonstrates successful application direct-on-filter (DOF) Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Incidentally, DOF FTIR been focus recent efforts enable rapid measurement silica RCMD. Concurrent constituents thus logical next step, which can allow broader interpretation composition source contributions.

4 Health Effects of Exposure to Respirable Coal Mine Dust
This chapter describes the adverse health effects associated with exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Epidemiological studies of underground and surface coal miners in the United States and other countries are discussed. Also discussed are animal studies that add to our understanding of particle deposition and retention in the lungs and associated disease responses. This chapter emphasizes s...
متن کاملHow does limestone rock dust prevent coal dust explosions in coal mines?
Coal dust explosions in underground coal mines are pre vented by a generous application of rock dust (usually lime stone). If an explosion should occur, the rock dust disperses, mixes with the coal dust and prevents fl ame propagation by acting as a thermal inhibitor or heat sink. To investigate this process in more detail, a number of ex plosion experiments using various coal dust and limes...
متن کاملEquivalency of a personal dust monitor to the current United States coal mine respirable dust sampler.
The United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, through an informal partnership with industry, labor, and the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration, has developed and tested a new instrument known as the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM). The new dust monitor is an integral part of the cap lamp that coal miners normally carry to work and provides continuous info...
متن کاملRespirable quartz hazard associated with coal mine roof bolter dust
This study examined the potential for coal mine roof bolter dust to be a source of a worker’s exposure to respirable quartz. For the models of roof bolter studied, the dust from bolt hole drilling is collected by a dry vacuum exhaust system. The collected dust-laden air passes through a cyclone size-separator (pre-cleaner) and into a collector box containing two additional cyclones and a filter...
متن کاملSampling and analysis method for measuring airborne coal dust mass in mixtures with limestone (rock) dust.
Airborne coal dust mass measurements in underground bituminous coal mines can be challenged by the presence of airborne limestone dust, which is an incombustible dust applied to prevent the propagation of dust explosions. To accurately measure the coal portion of this mixed airborne dust, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a sampling and analysis protoco...
